Bernie’s Bar opened in 2023, and is the region’s only dedicated LGBTQIA+ venue. We host safe, inclusive and joyful parties every weekend to connect our community.

We’re more than just a bar. Bernie’s is Newcastle’s only dedicated LGBTQIA+ venue. We run events for the whole community and throw the best parties in the city every Friday and Saturday night.

Bernie’s Bar is a unique place, and every night is different! We have different party themes and styles every weekend, so the right party for you is never far away. Bernie’s Bar is a small nightclub and bar famous for being a space where you can just be you!
Where is Bernie’s bar?
Bernie’s Bar is located at 410 King Street, Newcastle West NSW 2300 on the corner of King Street and Devonshire Street (our beloved laneway). Bernie’s Bar is in the middle of Newcastle’s Midtown district; the home of the Newcastle CBDs best parties. Newcastle is just under 2 hours north of Sydney, and about an hour away from the Hunter Valley.
Does Bernie’s Bar accept Hens or Bucks parties?
No, Bernie’s Bar does not permit entry to Hens or Bucks parties. This policy is in place for the enjoyment of our other patrons.
What are Bernie’s Bar’s opening hours?
Bernie’s Bar is open every Friday and Saturday nights from 7pm to 1am. Bernie’s Bar opens for other days for special events. Check our Events page and our social media for more information.
Does Bernie’s Bar have a lockout?
Yes. Bernie’s Bar locks out at 12:00am and generally only permits re-entry for patrons who have already been in the bar that evening. This can shift earlier or later on the night at management’s discretion.
Is Bernie’s Bar open on weeknights?
Bernie’s Bar is not open through the week, and is only open on Friday and Saturday nights. We are sometimes open other days for special events. Check our Events page and our social media for more information.
Is Bernie’s Bar LGBTQIA+ only, or is everyone welcome?
Bernie’s Bar is Newcastle’s only dedicated LGBTQIA+ venue. Everyone who is supportive of the queer community is welcome at Bernie’s Bar, including anyone under the rainbow and our allies.
Is ID required to enter Bernie’s Bar?
Yes. All patrons must present a valid government-issued photo ID. NOTE: we cannot accept student or university IDs. Please bring your ID with you, it will be scanned at the door by one of our team. We have partnered with iDU Australia to assist with ID scanning, and follow all applicable data privacy legislation.
Are minors permitted at Bernie’s Bar?
Minors accompanied by a parent or guardian are permitted until 9pm. At 9pm all minors need to leave the bar.
Does Bernie’s Bar host drag or live performances?
Yes! Bernie’s Bar is a home for Newcastle’s drag community, and books a wide range of drag kings, drag queens, other drag performers, burlesque, pole, and a huge range of other performers. Bernie’s Bar hosts performances every Saturday night, and many Fridays too.
Is there outdoors space at Bernie’s Bar?
Yes. Bernie’s Bar has an outdoor section with chairs and tables, as well as places outside for smoking and vaping.
Does Bernie’s Bar Sell Food?
Yes. Bernie’s Bar offers a light snack menu. This menu has fries, loaded fries, hotdogs, noodle cups and fairy bread. Food can be purchased at the bar.
Is Bernie’s Bar Accessible?
Yes, Bernie’s Bar is on the ground floor, and is fully wheelchair accessible. Bernie’s Bar has an accessible restroom, and two ambulant cubicles. There is an accessible parking space on King Street out the front of the Bar.
